What is FilesMac?
FilesMac is a native file manager and text/code editor for macOS. It browses your Mac the way Finder does, with tabs, list and icon views, Quick Look and Connect to Server, and it can open any folder as a project with a file tree, a syntax-highlighting editor and live previews. It's built with Tauri, runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 12 Monterey or later, and costs $5 once after a 7-day free trial.
What do I get for $5?

Why would FilesMac ask for Full Disk Access? Do I have to give it?
You don't have to. macOS protects some folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, external drives, network shares, and some system areas) and asks before any app can open them. Without Full Disk Access, macOS will ask you folder by folder the first time, and a few protected places simply stay locked. FilesMac keeps working either way.
With Full Disk Access, FilesMac can show you everything Finder can. The welcome guide explains this when you first open the app and takes you to the right switch in System Settings. You can turn it off again any time. Either way, FilesMac has no code that sends your files anywhere.
Can I get my money back by posting about it?

Which file types can it open, edit and preview?
The editor highlights dozens of languages, including JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, CSS, Markdown, Python, Rust, Swift, Go, YAML, SQL and shell scripts, with find and replace and auto-save. It previews Markdown, HTML, images and PDFs live beside the editor, and Quick Look (Space) shows everything else macOS can preview.

How do updates work?
Every future version is included in the price. FilesMac doesn't phone home, so it won't nag you about updates. When a new version comes out, download it from this site and drag it over the old one. Your licence, settings, favourites and bookmarks stay where they are.
Can I use it on more than one Mac?
Yes, one licence works on up to 3 of your Macs at a time. Moving to a new one? Choose Deactivate in FilesMac ▸ Licence… on the old Mac, or free it from Polar's customer portal.
Is it notarised? Will macOS warn me when I open it?
Yes, it's notarised, and no, you won't see a warning. The app is signed with an Apple Developer ID, runs with the hardened runtime, and is notarised by Apple with the ticket stapled. The DMG is signed, notarised and stapled too, so Gatekeeper opens it without warnings, even offline.
Why isn't it on the Mac App Store?
App Store apps have to run in a sandbox, and a sandboxed app can't be a real file manager: it can't browse your whole disk or use Full Disk Access. So FilesMac is sold directly, as a signed and notarised download.
Does it replace Finder?
No. It works alongside Finder. Use whichever suits the moment, and drag files between the two.
